‘I am taking the stairs down to the lower ground floor… dark and dusty… one more round of stairs to go… I try to enter through the heavy metal door’.

Dr Azadeh Fatehrad is an artist and curator whose research, artistic, and curatorial practices are woven around a process of gathering information and generating new imagery in response to archival material. Ornament of Damage is the result of research undertaken in the archives of the Weltkulturen Museum, Frankfurt am Main, and the International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam, and focusses on pre-revolutionary Iranian photography. During the process of digitising the archive, glitches and technological errors produced poetic abstractions that can speak about collective and personal histories with an eloquent ambiguity.

Fatehrad’s book comprises a selection of these digitally abstracted photographs, together with a lyrical essay, and a series of poem-responses.
